Tonsillitis: Not to be Taken Lightly

Do you know someone who is experiencing painful inflammation of the tonsils? This situation should not be taken lightly.

What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsils are the glandular tissues situated at the back of your throat. They provide protection to your body from the foreign bodies (i.e. bacteria) which are harmful to your health. In reaction to an attack from a foreign body they swell up. This can lead to inflammation and pain of your tonsils (tonsillitis). Recurrent tonsillitis is a sign that the immunity level of your body is low. People eventually get tired of these repeated attacks and prefer to remove their tonsils.

Removing Your Tonsils is No Light Decision

Tonsils are important and should not be removed unless there are strong indications to the contrary. There are a few criteria suggested by medical experts where removing tonsils is mandatory. If your case fits into any of the following scenarios, removing your tonsils may be a solution to your problems.

When Removing Your Tonsils May Be a Preferable Option:

  • Repeated Tonsillitis Attacks: More than three severe attacks of tonsillitis (painful inflammation of the tonsils)
  • Tonsillar Hypertrophy: (tonsils that are so enlarged that they obstruct breathing, swallowing and make it difficult to sleep)
  • A Peritonsillar Abscess: (infected material around the tonsils which may spread over the roof of the mouth, and to the neck and chest)
  • Antibiotics Unhelpful: Chronic and recurrent attacks of tonsillitis which are not responding to antibiotics and other medications
  • Otitis Media: Recurrent acute of chronic Otitis Media (inflammation or infection of the middle ear that persists or keeps coming back and can cause long-term or permanent damage to the ear)
  • Unilateral Tonsil Hypertrophy: (enlargement of one tonsil)

The decision to remove your tonsils should not be taken lightly. Tonsils are the gatekeepers at the entrance of your body protecting it against foreign agents and bacteria. They are important for the normal functioning of your body. Removing them should be considered only if there is no other option to control their infection.
