Quantitative Fluid Analysis (QFA)

What is a Quantitative Fluid Analysis?

Quantitative Fluid Analysis (QFA) is a sophisticated means of assessing the body's Biological Terrain, a theory formulated by renowned physiologist, Dr. Claude Bernard over 100 years ago. The theory argues that it is the interstitial environment that the cell lives in that dictates the function and integrity of the cell, not the presence of microbes. Interstitial fluid is the fluid in and around the cell which bathes and nourishes the body's trillions of cells.

The Biological Terrain is fluid that is continuously circulating throughout the body. Its components are used to produce energy, to supply essential nutrients, and to create the biological fluids: blood, saliva, lymph and urine. Imbalances in the chemistry of the Biological Terrain may therefore affect the composition of the body's biological fluids. Assessing the biological fluids provides an efficient way to monitor certain aspects of the underlying biochemical state of the body and may provide valuable information as to what is happening at the cellular level.

When a cell lives in an unhealthy Biological Terrain or an interstitial environment that either lacks the proper balance of nutrients or pH, the cell can become unhealthy and fail to function properly. With prolonged exposure to stressful conditions, it is not likely that the integrity of the cell can be maintained. As it loses strength and resistance, the cell becomes more susceptible to the negative effects of microbes and organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites yeast and fungus.

Benefits of QFA

The information that is compiled during this test offers insight as to why you may be developing health problems. This test provides information on the states of hydration, digestion, detoxification and energy production. This information is compared with the data from thousands of other patients to identify areas of possible concern.

What to Expect

Following a 12-14-hour fast, small amounts of urine and saliva are collected. These fluids are injected into the flow cell chamber of the QFA machine where they contact sensitive electrodes that pick up the transfer of information. This data is digitally analyzed by a sophisticated computer program and reports are then generated. The results will be interpreted by our Clinical Nutritionist and explained to you at your scheduled nutrition consultation.

What is measured?

Quantitative Fluid Analysis (QFA) testing is a computerized assessment of the biochemical properties of a client's first morning urine and saliva for pH, oxidation-reduction potential (redox) and resistivity. These measurements provide specific values that provide an overview of the biochemical makeup of your body, organ function and the body's ability to utilize enzymes, amino acids and minerals.

pH

pH is a measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of a fluid. Some of the bodily processes that are pH dependent include:

  • Digestion and absorption of nutrients
  • Binding of hormones to their receptor sites
  • Enzyme activation

pH levels that are either too acidic or too alkaline can interfere with and ultimately prevent certain biochemical processes from occurring. pH testing is widely accepted in modern medicine and is a standard feature of all emergency room blood gas assessments.

Oxidation Reduction Potential (Redox)

This measurement provides information about the level of oxidative stress to which the cells are exposed in the interstitial environment. This is one of the most progressive areas of medical research today. Oxidative stress has been correlated with many degenerative diseases including heart and artery disease, cancers, diabetes, arthritis and even tissue aging.

The Biological Terrain can be compromised by prolonged exposure to specific chemicals, toxins, bacteria, viruses and fungi. Chronic exposure to these components can interfere with the body's ability to produce energy, leading to conditions such as chronic fatigue.

Resistivity

This measurement is a unique and accurate means for calculating the concentration of minerals in the body's fluids which affects the metabolic function and activity of the particular fluid. When the body's fluids contain too many minerals, the fluid gets congested and the processes of stagnation may occur. Conversely, if the body's fluids have too few minerals, the process of demineralization may occur, resulting in compromised bone maintenance and decreased muscle development.
